Swedish massage

Probably the most frequently requested massage and is the best introduction to massage. Because of its use of long smooth strokes and kneading or circular movements Swedish massage is best for relaxation therapy and a great way to introduce patients to the benefits of massage.

Deep Tissue massage

If chronically stiff muscles plague you or you find yourself battling postural problems as a result of stiff and knotted muscles then deep tissue massage may just be the answer. As the name suggests, the target of this massage is the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The strokes are shorter than with a Swedish massage and often goes across the grain of the muscle.

Deep tissue massage is an intensive form of massage therapy which works by breaking down the rigidity which is formed in tissue and muscles to alleviate limited movement and inflammation.

Sports massage

The aim behind sports massage is not only to alleviate tired and stiff muscles but to help prevent future injury. The strokes are faster and shorter than with Swedish massage. Used in conjunction with stretching this type of massage can loosen muscles and increase flexibility.

Hot Stone massage

Hot stone massage is a more gentle form of massage therapy as it is the warmth of the smooth stones placed on key points of the body. The warmth of the stones helps the muscles relax and the therapist can apply added pressure where necessary.

Hot stone massage improves circulation and has a calming effect which is why some patients prefer hot stone massage to any of the other techniques.

Things you should discuss with your therapist

Massage can be focused on any area of the body and styles can be adapted to achieve the desired results. It is best to consult with your massage therapist and allow their expert knowledge to guide you.

When you consult with a massage therapist it is to determine what type of massage will give you the best results. You don’t want any negative side effects from the massage so be sure to mention any kind of blood pressure problems or allergies you may have which could be triggered by the massage oils. Also be sure to mention anything that may concern you, health wise or concerning the massage you will receive.
