Lip Augmentation – What you should know

To augment something is to add to or increase and improve its existing qualities. The same description applies to lip augmentation.
And of the myriad of options you are presented with you will need to make an informed choice.

While recognised as a cosmetic procedure, lip augmentation is of benefit to those looking to enhance their appearance and to those who may have found themselves with lips which can benefit from some form of augmentation.

What are the benefits of lip augmentation?

  • Balanced features
  • Fuller lips
  • Improved confidence

What are the methods by which the desired result can be achieved?

Of the number of methods of lip augmentation each has it’s own set of benefits and drawbacks. Discuss these with your doctor and let him help you decide which will suit your requirements best.  We have looked at the two most common options.

Collagen and Hyaluronic acid are two methods of lip augmentation and dermal filler with the latter growing in popularity to due to its low risk factor.

Collagen injections

Collagen occurs naturally throughout the body, it is the most abundant protein in the vatious connective tissues. givng the skin its natural plumpness and ensuring elasticity. Where skin has been broken collagen is the main ingredient in the repair process.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body and serves as a cushion and lubricant between the joints and other tissues.
Hyaluronic acid which has been especially prepared for the purpose can be used as an injectable dermal filler to plump up lips and add shape and volume.
The form of Hyaluronic acid that we use is the Juvederm Ultra range which we have chosen because:
There is better control over quantities injected allowing for better control over the results.
The increased control the doctor has means that you can do the procedure over a few sessions.
Hyaluronic Acid is produced in the body, which minimises the possibility of a negative reaction.

What are the risks of this type of procedure?

  • Bearing in mind that your lips are extremely tender you may experience redness and possibly some swelling or bruising. In some cases the injection sites may bleed slightly.
  • In rare cases an allergic reaction to the product may be experienced so it is a good idea to discuss an allergy test with your doctor.
  • Possible scarring or infection of the site. Discussing proper care procedures with your doctor and implementing them will minimise this type of risk.
  • Swelling of the lips may take slightly longer to dissipate than on other parts of the body.

What to expect if you decide that lip augmentation is for you?

  • The techniques that only require injections are quick and don’t really require too much recovery time.
  • Anesthetics are not required but your doctor will apply a topical numbing agent.
  • Procedures that require the collection of fat from a different part of your body will require a longer time and different methods.
  • Make sure you have access to some ice, it will help ease the swelling of the lips.
  • You wont be able to wear any lipstick or lipbalm for a day or two after the procedure, application of these will put unnecessary pressure on the lips that can result in complications.
  • These fillers do not last forever so if you are happy with the results you can discuss what would be the best intervals at which to replenish your fillers.
