Telangiectasia or Spider Veins
You may not have noticed them before but if you have been spending a lot of time standing or your weight is a bit higher than it should be, you might see small veins just below the surface of the skin on your legs. These are commonly called spider veins.
Although they don’t cause any discomfort they can be noticable and if they are dark or red they could cause one to become self conscious and less inclined to wear favourite items of clothing.
Although the spider veins are not life threatening there are accompanying symptoms which can be uncomfortable:
- a feeling of tiredness in the legs
- heaviness in the legs
- and occasionally swelling of the legs can occur
Who can spider veins affect?
Spider veins can affect almost anyone but those most commonly affected are those that spend a lot of time on their feet, standing or walking to and fro’.
- Nurses
- Teachers
- Shop assistants
- Pedestrian law enforcement
Luckily there is a solution
Laser therapy has reached a point in its evolution where it can now be used to successfully target the very small veins and blood vessels that appear on the surface of the skin.
Laser treatment is a pulse of light which causes the blood vessel to stop carrying blood and effectively die, thus receding from the surface of the skin, leaving a blemish free appearance in its wake.

What can you do to help prevent the appearance or re-appearance of spider veins?
Give your legs a break: Avoid standing for long stretches of time, or if you are seated for most of the day you could try the proverbial stretching of the legs by taking a small walk every half hour or so, its good for the circulation and it will ease any pressure on your veins.
Cardio exercise: Get your blood flowing through walking or running. Not only will you ease some of the pressure from sitting you might even lose some weight.
Feet up: When you do sit, try doing it with your feet up, an ottoman or low chair should do the trick, you will feel the relief almost instantly.
Support hose: Not only for old people or passengers on a plane, support socks come in a lightweight fabric and will help to ease pressure on the legs.
