Understanding Cellulite

The uneven deposits of fat which cause the skin to look mis-shapen and bumpy is called cellulite. Often referred to as hail damage or orange peel skin cellulite is most prevalent on the buttocks and thighs.  The unevenness is caused by the fat deposits pushing against the connective tissue.

Who is affected by cellulite?

Cellulite usually makes its appearance after puberty and generally affects women and can be the result of :

Genetics: Being genetically predisposed to cellulite is quite a common cause behind its appearance. The genes responsible for this prevalence are spread across a broad spectrum from racial specifics to gender and individual metabolic rate.

Diet and lifestyle: A poor diet which is low in fibre and high in fat and carbohydrates will not only lead to excess weight being carried by the individual but also to the presence of cellulite. Lifestyles which do not include exercise are also causes behind obesity and cellulite, habits such as smoking are also contributors.

Following extreme or fad diets for a short while and then reverting back to old habits creates confusion within the body’s processes causing it to respond with unfortunate results like cellulite.

Hormones: Occurring in different quantities in each individual, excess of certain hormones, and aided further by the presence of estrogen.  The lower levels of estrogen in men will ensure that the appearance of cellulite is a rare occurrence.

Dehydration: Insufficient intake of fluids, slows down or prevents completion of certain processes in the body, causing deposits of impurities or fats which should have been eliminated, making it easier for cellulite to form.
